As a consultant for the Occupational Health and Hygiene Team, Melodie delivers a range of occupational hygiene services including; training courses, qualitative and quantitative assessments for chemical, physical and biological agents within local authorities, chemical storage, food and manufacturing industries.
Melodie has a BSc (Hons) degree in Occupational Health and Safety (Occupational Hygiene) from the University of Wolverhampton where she gained a 2-1 honours degree. Her final dissertation project centred on the Asbestos at Work Regulations and this led to her finding work in the asbestos industry.
Melodie’s work in the asbestos industry included BOHS training to become a qualified asbestos analyst and surveyor. Her experience in analysis and surveying covered a wide variety of industries including manufacturing, local housing, demolition and construction.
She was instrumental in the setting up, marketing and day to day running of their occupational hygiene department and during this time Melodie also trained to become an environmental noise assessor and undertook environmental noise surveys for a variety of clients. Melodie became Health and safety officer for her company.
She was responsible for regular training programmes and for the set up and establishment of the health and safety policy and systems including organisational risk assessments for stress. This work led to the company branching out into the field of health and safety consultancy and Melodie was again instrumental in setting up and Co-running this department. She wrote and reviewed many health and safety policies and risk assessments for clients and undertook health and safety audits and occupational hygiene visits.
Melodie joined Sypol in 2007 and has undertaken various air monitoring surveys and Noise surveys (both occupational and environmental). Melodie became asbestos team leader in June 2007 and was able to oversee the asbestos survey work undertaken also participating in asbestos procurement for clients and the writing of asbestos policies and procedures. Melodie has written articles on asbestos for a well known environmental website and contributed to a chapter of a health and safety book on asbestos.
Melodie has undertaken training to become an IOSH stress management trainer and has been involved in the formulation and delivery of Sypol’s ‘‘Steps to success’’ organizational stress risk assessment programme. Melodie has had an article on stress at work published in a leading HR magazine. She also delivers training and awareness courses in Stress asbestos and occupational health.
Currently Melodie heads up delivery of a preventative occupational health management strategy at the London 2012 Olympic site. This is an innovation in the construction industry bringing both clinical and preventative occupational hygiene together in one purpose built facility. She has contributed to an article on this project in a leading Health and safety magazine and gives seminars on occupational health in construction.
