All companies must comply with the COSHH Regulations. Risk assessment forms an important part of the task and involves the identification of all materials used, the harm that they could cause, the likelihood of harm occurring and the controls needed to prevent this. A list of safety data sheets is just not enough because assessments are carried out on the various uses of each material, not the material itself. You also need to make sure your employees are aware of and understand how to protect themselves, you need to monitor the effectiveness of your controls and you need to make sure your assessments are always up to date. So in a nutshell, identify the material used, look at how it is used, how much is used, how long it is used and any other factors within the workplace and then risk assess it. Sound easy?
